These brusselssprouts are simplyfantastic. They are truly the best brussels sprouts I have ever had. Now I do not think that I have had brussels sprouts since I was a kid because I have such bad memories about them. I know you have to try things again once you are an adult so I bought some at the store this week and then searched for a great recipe. Well, I lucked out. There sure is a lot of slicing involved, but it was worth all the work. You have to try these!

This was both my and my husband's first experience with brussels sprouts and we loved this recipe. I did substitute brown sugar for the white sugar, but other than that made it exactly as provided. The extra crunch from the pecans was fabulous. I was shocked my husband liked it because he is very picky about vegetables, but he enjoyed it. This is a great recipe for a brussels sprouts first timer like us!

Made this recipe last Christmas for family dinner - sooo good. Didn't think the menfolk would like it, but I was wrong - they loved it and asked for it again this year.

This was so quick (used pre-shredded sprouts) and easy and really good. If you like brussels sprouts this is a great preparation. Used a little less sugar than called for andit was perfect.

Easy to make and good for you too. A non-brussel sprout eater found this recipe good enough to go through his entire serving, asking me to pass the recipe on to his sister. I used 1/2 the sugar on recommendation from another reviewer, but next time I think I'll follow it to a tee or substitute brown sugar instead. Not as full a taste as the brussel sprouts I've had cooked more simply but I will try again.

I served these at Christmas along with green beans for the Brussels sprouts haters (no one is neutral about Brussels sprouts). After a taste, they loved them - no leftovers! New converts.

I have made this multiple times and there is never any left. The last time I made it was Christmas Eve, serving it with prime rib and it did not disappoint. I have used apple juice in place of chicken broth and left out the sugar which seemed to work really well. Otherwise I've always made it to spec.

I've tried a couple of different brussels sprouts recipes over the last year--trying to like them. I have been very disappointed so far, but this recipe was terrific! I didn't want to stop eating it. With most brussels spouts recipes, I don't want to start. This will be the go to recipe from now on.

I really dont like brussel sprouts but I made this for my husband and I have to admit I really liked it. If youre trying to break out of your brussel sprout hate then try this recipe. I used pine nuts instead of pecans and added sliced carrots. It was excellent!

These is the first Brussels sprouts I have ever had in my life. Let me tell you, it was delicious. Will definitely become a staple in my house. It is like a mixture between carrots, lettuce, and broccoli. I recommend this to anyone that says Brussels sprouts are gross. This will prove them wrong.

This recipe was flavorful and easy to make (although it took a long time to chop all the sprouts), but I felt was lacking a little something. Next time, I will try to mince the garlic instead of slicing it. The sugar was a nice twist to take off some of the bite for guests who werent' keen on the bitterness of brussel sprouts. Maybe brown sugar would offer a little more of a "candied" taste?

FAQs

Why do you soak brussel sprouts before cooking? ›

Not only can soaking make the centers more malleable, but the water that's absorbed into them will create a steaming action, whether you choose to roast, saute, or make your Brussels sprouts in your air fryer. The steam can help to ensure the cooking is even throughout the Brussels sprout.

Do you cut the ends off of Brussels sprouts before you cook them? ›

No matter how you're going to cook your Brussels sprouts, you'll want to trim them first. At the base of each sprout is the spot where it was originally connected to the plant. Unless you've just cut the sprouts off the stalk yourself, this area will have become dry and browned during storage.

What makes brussel sprouts taste good? ›

Over the last twenty years, farmers have mellowed the "unpleasant" flavor of brussels sprouts by breeding a vegetable that contains fewer bitter compounds or glucosinolates. So, brussels sprouts just taste better than they used to when we were kids. The rub is that glucosinolates help protect sprouts against pests.

Do you cook Brussels sprouts cut side up or down? ›

Roast 'em! Our two rules: place and space! Place them cut side down to create that slightly crunchy exterior and soft interior. Space them out evenly so they don't steam–a crowded sheet pan party is not where your brussels want to be.

Do you eat brussel sprout stems? ›

Yes, you can eat the stalk. Slice off the Brussels sprouts when they're fork tender, and return the stem to the oven. Let it roast for another 15 minutes. Test for tenderness, and then split the stalk with a sharp knife.

Place each soaked lentil in its respective cloth. Sprinkle some water on the kitchen towel to make it a little damp. Do so every 12 hours. After a day the green moong and moth beans would have sprouted.

Rich in antioxidants

Brussels sprouts are high in antioxidants, compounds that promote overall health and help prevent damage to cells ( 5 , 6). Eating Brussels sprouts as part of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help supply the antioxidants your body needs to promote good health.

Why do brussel sprouts taste bad sometimes? ›

While many older people prefer the classical bitter tastes, Van der Toorn notes that younger people tend to prefer the milder tasting varieties that have now become the industry standard. The bitter taste of Brussels sprouts comes from compounds called glucosinolates and their degradation products, he explains.

Do you flip Brussels sprouts in the oven? ›

Should you cut Brussels sprouts in half before boiling? ›

Halve, quarter or shred sprouts to minimise the cooking time. If the sprouts are larger than average and you want them to remain whole, you can of course cook them for longer. They will probably need 7-8 minutes to cook through. Don't cut a cross in the base of your sprouts.

However, the natural agents that protect them from early germination can wreak havoc in our digestive system. How do you get the bitterness out of brussel sprouts? ›

A splash of lemon juice, or even apple cider vinegar, works wonders on bitter sprouts. Another key ingredient is fat, which helps Brussels sprouts to crisp up. This is why it's so popular to render bacon fat and cook Brussels sprouts in it, then add the bacon bits back in at the end.

Should Brussels sprouts be kept in water overnight? ›

Brussels sprouts should be kept unwashed until use; any excess water or moisture can cause molding. If your vegetables come home moist because they were spritzed in the grocery store, pat them dry with a paper towel.
