We absolutely love to use an air fryer to cook whole chicken. It keeps us from having to heat up the kitchen (or RV) and produces perfectly crisp and juicy chicken every time. We regularly use both our traditional air fryer and the air crisp feature on our Ninja Foodi to make this recipe.

How to Air Crisp Whole Chicken in Ninja Foodi

What size chicken do I need to cook a whole chicken in an air fryer?

We prefer to use a 5 lb chicken in our 5.8 quart Air Fryer and our 6.5 quart Ninja Foodi. You can use smaller or bigger birds, you will just need to adjust cooking times accordingly.

How long do I cook a whole chicken in an air fryer?

We typically air fry our 5 lb chicken for 30 minutes on each side at 360 degrees. If you are using a larger bird it may take longer, while a smaller one may take less time. You will want to make sure that your chicken is cooked to at least 165. If in doubt, a good meat thermometer comes in handy. We typically like to cook longer than the 165 mark to create a more tender texture. If your chicken is tough, cook longer.

How do I keep my air fryer chicken from drying out?

Overcooking air fryer chicken will dry it out. For optimal juiciness, cook your chicken to the texture you desire and let it rest for 10 minutes before cutting into it.

FAQs

Is whole chicken better in the oven or air fryer? ›

The best cooking hacks are time- or effort-saving but still produce optimal results, and cooking a whole chicken in the air fryer is the best kitchen hack I've discovered all year. Speed-roasting a whole chicken results in crispier skin and juicier meat and takes about 20% less time than using a large oven.

How long should chicken be cooked in an air fryer? ›

Air fry: Preheat the air fryer. Place the chicken on the air fryer basket / grate in an even layer, leaving a bit of space for air to circulate around. Air fry the chicken at 415 degrees for 10 minutes. If you have larger pieces of chicken, you'll want to go closer to 13 minutes.

How do you keep chicken from drying out in an air fryer? ›

The #1 tip for the best chicken breasts in an air fryer is: Don't overcook them! Chicken breasts should be cooked to 160°F, but if you cook them all the way to that temperature in the air fryer, carryover cooking will take them beyond that temp and cause them to dry out.

Why is my chicken rubbery in air fryer? ›

The most likely reason for tough chicken in the air fryer is overcooking. Be sure to cook it to only 160-degrees and then allow it to rest for 5-minutes tented with foil. Do you have to flip chicken in the air fryer? For best results, you should flip your chicken in the air fryer halfway through.

Is air frying chicken better than oven? ›

Which is better between air frying vs. oven baking? Air-frying is a healthier alternative to deep-fried foods, but oven-baking often preserves good nutrients while filtering out the bad ones, making oven-baked foods even healthier than most air-fried foods.

Is it better to roast or bake a whole chicken? ›

If you're cooking food that has a solid structure — like any type of meat or vegetables — no matter the temperature of the oven, you'll roast it. If you're cooking food that doesn't already have a solid structure, but will after it's cooked — like muffins, cake, bread, and casseroles — the proper method is baking.

Why is my chicken still raw in the air fryer? ›

Add a small amount of oil

Some experts also recommend patting your chicken dry before putting it in the air fryer or adding a small amount of oil. Just like with any food cooked in the air fryer, stir or rotate your chicken during cooking to ensure all sides are cooking evenly.

Do I need to flip chicken in air fryer? ›

Cook at 360° for 9 minutes. Then flip the chicken breast over and cook for another 9 minutes. Larger chicken breasts need more cook time, and smaller ones need less time. Open the air fryer immediately so it doesn't continue cooking in the heat.

Can you put foil in an air fryer? ›

The great news about air fryers is that you can use foil along with parchment paper to cook your food in an air fryer. Just remember that if it's safe and effective to use in a conventional oven, it will work just fine in an air fryer.

Should I coat chicken in oil before air frying? ›

While I do recommend very lightly spraying the fried chicken with oil before and during air frying, you don't submerge the pieces entirely in oil, and as a result, they undoubtedly absorb less oil in the process.

Why isn't my chicken getting crispy in the air fryer? ›

Dry the outside of the food properly before you add oil. Do not use too much oil, as this will make the food less crispy and more fattening. Meat or poultry can be lightly brushed with oil or marinated to get the crispiest results.

Do I put water in air fryer for chicken? ›

The short answer is no, you should not put water in an air fryer to steam or to boil. An air fryer essentially works by circulating hot air using a heating coil and an inbuilt fan.

Should I put foil in my air fryer for chicken? ›

Foil is safe to use in an air fryer so long as you follow three basic rules: never let foil touch the heating element; make sure the foil is weighted so it doesn't blow around the basket; and avoid contact with acidic ingredients, which can cause the foil to leach onto your food.

Can you cook raw chicken in an air fryer? ›

Yes, you put raw frozen chicken in the air fryer! You won't be able to brine it first or pound it to an even thickness (so the results are not *as* juicy) but if you forget to thaw your chicken, it's a great option to have on hand.

Which is better to buy oven or air fryer? ›

If you own an oven and the budget permits, an air fryer will be a great addition to your kitchen. An air fryer uses less oil and preserves the food's nutrients, so it will be a healthy alternative when you want to cook meals with little to no oil for one or two people.

Is it better to cook chicken in air fryer or pan? ›

First, there is a health benefit to air frying over deep frying or pan frying. While I do recommend very lightly spraying the fried chicken with oil before and during air frying, you don't submerge the pieces entirely in oil, and as a result, they undoubtedly absorb less oil in the process.

Is it healthier to cook in an air fryer or oven? ›

The evidence so far suggests that air frying is healthier than deep-frying, but it's not necessarily healthier than pan frying or baking in an oven. What really matters is your overall dietary pattern and the quality of the food you're eating.

Is chicken better fried or oven? ›

But there's a healthier, equally delicious way to eat comfort food like fried chicken. And it's all thanks to your oven. By cooking chicken in the oven, you'll use little oil, which will minimize heart health risks. Aside from being healthier for your heart, this chicken is also high in protein (8 g per serving).
